Paying through your employer (US)

Many US employers pay for training through an educational assistance plan under Section 127 of the tax code. This is not tax advice; your employer or a tax adviser can say what applies to you.

What Section 127 is:

  • An employer may give each employee up to $5,250 a year for education that may not count as taxable income. The limit rises with the cost of living after 2026.
  • The course need not be job-related or lead to a degree.
  • It works only under the employer’s written plan, and whether a self-paced online course counts is up to them.

What to ask HR:

  1. Do we have a Section 127 plan, and can I read it?
  2. Does it cover an online, self-paced course that is not part of a degree?
  3. Do you pay or reimburse, and do I need approval first?
  4. What proof do you need?
  5. Moxlearn renews until I cancel. Is that fine?

What Moxlearn provides: a receipt for every payment (You tab, “Receipts”, then “Print or save as PDF”), a training request letter below, and a certificate of completion with a public link when you finish. It is not an accredited qualification.

We bill you, not your company, and take no purchase orders yet. If they reimburse you, pay first and send the receipt.

Canada: employers can usually pay for or reimburse staff training. Tax treatment depends on your situation, so ask payroll or an accountant. We promise none.

Subject: Request for training support: Moxlearn, Practical AI for Work

Hello [name],

I would like to ask whether the company can pay for, or reimburse, an online course that will help me use AI in my current work. If we have an educational assistance plan, I would like to know whether this course can be covered under it.

The course
Moxlearn, "Practical AI for Work", is a self-paced online course for people who are not technical. It has 92 short video lessons of about ten minutes each, about 8.8 hours of video in all, with practice on a live AI, quick checks and a real-work assignment in each unit. I would start with Level 1: 4 units and 28 lessons (Foundations, Create, Automate, Put it to work). I work through it in my own time. There is no live class.

What I would learn
- Foundations: Prompt with role, task and format, then automate your first real task.
- Create: Content, images, slides and research in your own voice.
- Automate: Data, inbox, custom assistants and no-code automations.
- Put it to work: Portfolio, profiles, outreach and how to scope client work.

How it would help my work
[One or two sentences: the tasks you would use AI for, and the time it should save or the quality it should improve.]

What it costs
- Monthly membership: $38.95 every 4 weeks, until cancelled.
- Quarterly membership: $94.85 every 12 weeks, until cancelled.
I plan to choose the [monthly / quarterly] membership and expect to need [number] weeks. I will cancel when I finish, and I will send you the receipt for each payment. Prices are in US dollars and include any tax.

What you would get from me
- A receipt for each payment, showing the seller, my name and email, the course, the period covered, the amount, the tax and a receipt number.
- A certificate of completion with a public link that anyone can check. It is a certificate of completion, not an accredited qualification.

Could you let me know whether this is possible, whether you need approval before I pay, and what paperwork you need from me?

Thank you,
