What we keep in your browser storage

These items sit in your browser’s local storage on your device. They are not cookies and are not sent with every request. Clearing your site data removes them.

KeyWhat it holdsWhy
upshift.learn.v1Your lesson progress: points, finished lessons, streak, the name you set, prompts you wrote, certificates and settings. So your learning works without an account and survives a page reload. If you sign in, a copy is also saved to your account.
upshift.learnerA random id made on your device. It has no name or email in it.Shares out the daily AI practice allowance and labels your practice submissions. It is sent with those requests only, never with usage counts.
skilldawn:analyticsThe word “off”, only if you turned anonymous analytics off. Nothing is stored here otherwise. So we send no usage counts from this browser. Change it with “Analytics choices” at the foot of our public pages, or in Settings in the learning app.
upshift:notes-hidden:v1Whether you hid the lesson notes.Remembers your choice.
upshift:voice-hint:v1Whether you have seen the voice typing hint.Remembers your choice.
funnel:skilldawn-start:v3.0.0Your answers and place in the “find my starting point” quiz.So you can pick the quiz up where you left it. Quiz answers stay in your browser and are not sent to us.

Browser reminders

If you choose browser reminders, your browser registers a small helper script (a service worker, /sw.js) so it can show the notification. It only shows reminders and opens the app when you tap one. It does not store pages or files.

Your browser also gives us a push address that belongs to your browser maker’s push service. We keep it to send your reminder. Turn reminders off in the app, or block notifications in your browser, to stop it.

Our usage counts

The landing page, the quiz and the learning app send us short, anonymous events, such as “reached step 3”, “finished a lesson”, “the Continue button was clicked” or “this page took 2 seconds to show”. Each one carries a visit id, a time, phone, tablet or computer, and a few plain fields. We never send your quiz answers, what you type, your name or your email, and events are never linked to your account.

The visit id is a random code kept in your browser tab’s session storage (key skilldawn:visit). It is new for every tab and every browser session, and your browser deletes it when the tab is closed. It is not the upshift.learner id above.

We run these counts ourselves, on our own server, look at them only as totals, and delete them after 90 days. No outside analytics or advertising company receives them. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control, or you turn analytics off, nothing is sent. See “Anonymous analytics” in the Privacy Policy.

Outside services our pages load

  • Google Fonts. Our pages load their typefaces from Google, so your browser contacts Google servers and Google receives your IP address and browser details. What Google does with that is covered by Google’s own privacy notes for Google Fonts, not by ours.
  • Stripe. When you join, we send you to Stripe’s payment page. Stripe may set its own cookies there, under its own policy. Our pages do not run Stripe’s scripts.

We do not use advertising pixels, social media buttons or session recording.

Your choices

You can clear cookies and site data in your browser at any time. To ask what we hold about you, or to have it deleted, use the contact form and choose “privacy request”. More in our Privacy Policy.
