Glossary

AI at work glossary: the terms, in plain words.

The ideas the lessons teach, each in a sentence or two, with the lesson where you practise it.

Prompting

Three-part prompt
A prompt that gives the AI a role (who it should be), a task (the exact job, with a clear output and a number) and a format (the shape of the answer). A vague answer usually means a vague prompt.Taught in The 3-part prompt: role, task, format, Practical AI for Work.
Context
The background the AI cannot see, such as who the reader is and what has just happened. It answers “for whom, and why”.Taught in Context, examples and constraints, Practical AI for Work.
Example
One sample of what you want, pasted into the prompt, so the AI can match its style.Taught in Context, examples and constraints, Practical AI for Work.
Constraint
A limit you set in a prompt, such as a word count, a tone or a word to avoid.Taught in Context, examples and constraints, Practical AI for Work.
Follow-up
A short message that tells the AI exactly what to change in its last answer. Treat the first answer as a draft and fix it with a specific follow-up.Taught in Refine answers and catch AI mistakes, Practical AI for Work.
Reusable prompt
A prompt whose structure you write once; each time, you paste in only the new material, such as this week’s notes.Taught in Automate your weekly report, Practical AI for Work.
Prompt template
A prompt with blanks. You fill the blanks each time you use it, so a good prompt can be used again for a new job.Taught in Build your own prompt templates, Practical AI for Work.
Placeholder
A word in square brackets in a template, such as [PRODUCT] or [AUDIENCE], that you swap each time you use the prompt.Taught in Build your own prompt templates, Practical AI for Work.
Workflow
A set of steps, each done by its own prompt, where the output of one step becomes the input to the next.Taught in Project 1: a 3-step workflow for your field, Practical AI for Work.
Batch prompt
One prompt that plans many pieces at once, such as a month of posts on one theme, usually as a table of ideas before any drafts.Taught in A month of social content in one sitting, Practical AI for Work.

Grounding
Making an assistant answer from the facts in your file, not from its own guesses.Taught in Knowledge files: give it your facts, AI Builder: Agents & Chatbots.
Test set
A list of questions you run through an assistant and mark pass or fail, so you can see where it goes wrong before anyone else does.Taught in Test it and add guardrails, AI Builder: Agents & Chatbots.
